Personal interview preparation

Interview are one of the most popularly use device for employee selection. Interviews vary in the extent to which the question are structured, from a totally unstructured and free-wheeling conversation, to a structured interview in which an applicant is asked a predetermined list of question in a specified order.

TIPS FOR INTERVIEW

DO’S in interview
  • Do the research about the company and the profile in question
  • Dress professionally
  • Show enthusiasm with body language
  • Listening attentively and responding carefully will ease you at PI
  • Don’t sound self-centered/overconfident
  • Your tone must balanced
  • Ask yourself “what is the question really asking”
  • Keep informative and short answers
  • Give positive answers
  • Negative conversations don’t give a good impression to the interviewer.

Don’t in interview
  • Being late for the interview
  • Eat, drink, smoke or chew gum even if the interviewer does so
  • Fiddle with your keys, hair, tie, watch, pen or any other item
  • Keep your hands in your pockets or fold your arms across your chest
  • Bringing up the issue of salary and benefit
  • Not looking at interviewer
  • Criticizing your campus or previous employer

Preparation for most commonly asked question:

Kindly introduce yourself or tell us something about yourself or can you run as through your profile

What is your greatest strength?
With this question, the interviewer seeks to find out if;
  • Your strength align with the company’s needs (Functional qualities)
  • You can do the job and perform like a rock star (Functional qualities)
  • You have qualities skills, and/or experience that set you apart from the competition
  • You are someone who will make an excellent addition to the team(attitudinal qualities/Team work)

To find your strength
  • Brainstorm: Sit down and make a list of your top strengths – aim for at least 10 and be creative. Banish your modest internal editor to another room. Jot down everything that comes to mind.  You can delete later if you like. This can include talents,  Experience, Soft skills, Education/Training etc. Probable strength can be being analytic, team player, good at Java programming etc. Avoid clinched strength like hardworking and sincere.
  • Focus: Narrow your list down to least five strength that you are comfortable discussing (or could get comfortable discussing with a little bit of practice). The more, the better. You may not talk about all of these strengths in every interview, but it’s good to have options.
  • Prepare Examples: Develop at least one example to illustrate each of your strengths

What is your greatest weakness?
What your interviewer is really trying to do with this question-beyond identifying any major red flags- is to gauge your self-awareness and honesty.

Commonly made mistakes while answering this question are
1.  Trying to turn a negative into a positive.
You will find many people who advise you to “turn a negative into a positive”  by sharing a supposed weakness that is actually quality in an employee. A few examples: I am too much of a perfectionist, I work too hard sometimes, I care too much about my work.
Clear idea. At this point, though, it’s an old trick and the interviewer sees right through it. In fact, this approach will likely made her think you are hiding something.

2.  Not answering the question
Many candidate say that they can’t think of any weakness of theirs, this reflects lack of introspection or raises a suspicion that you are hiding something.

3.  Reveal a weakness that makes you a wrong candidate for the profile
Weakness like “I am not a team player”, I have issues with authority”,”I struggle to make it on time” are a clear NO.

To answer this question,

1.  Be honest:  Don’s say anything just because your friend said this once and got away with that. That should genuinely be an aspect of your quality which you are (or want to) to work upon.

2.  Pick an acceptable weakness:- Not being a perfectionist can work for a sales job, but for an advertisement profile.  Hating math can work for an HR profile but not an accountant. Hence it is important to understand profile before answering this question

3.  Show that you are working on it and share results if any.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

If asked this question, be honest and specific about your future goals, but consider this: A hiring manager wants to know
  • If you’ve set realistic expectation for your career. Many candidates have mentioned their goal to be CEO in five years. This will certainly kill all your chances to qualify the interview
  • If you have an ambition (i.e. this interview isn’t the first time you are considering the question)
  • If the profile aligns with your goals and growth. Your best is to think realistically about where this position could take you and answer along those lines.
  • If you will stick with your company for at least 2 years. So if you have ambitions which have nothing to with this company or this sector, this will likely go against you. Also if you have any entrepreneurial ambition, interview might not be the right time to express it.

What are your hobbies/interest/passion?

Question like these could from a number of concern the employer might have such as your overall health and energy level, your mentality, or how you might engage and entertain clients and coworkers.

Avoid
Avoid hobbies which do not portray good picture of you like surfing internet, partying, sleeping, while computer gaming can make you suitable for certain kind of profile, it is not suitable for most of jobs. Any kind of illegal activity is to be avoided at all costs

The best way to respond
Do make sure that your answers are genuine e.g. don’t drag about fitness regime if you are not in great shape. But focus on answers that demonstrate a positive quality of yours
  • Exercise and health related activities: it’s true that exercise and fitness related hobbies can demonstrate health, energy, vitality, and the ability to manage stress. Older candidate should make some points of this sort if possible. Sports like golf, tennis can be useful ways to interact with clients and build relationships.
  • Volunteering and community participation: you might mention your volunteer work or community activity like coaching child etc. volunteer work shows high character and a concern for someone other than yourself.
  • Professional development and continuing education: Professional development activities are another potentially rich area of sharing how you use your spare time. Maybe you take classed or seminars, read journals, or complete online tutorial that enhance skills related to your job.
  • Reading: Be sure you know your genre well and aware of the latest publications in the same even if you have not read them all.

Why  should we hire you?

This interview question seems forward , but if you are asked it, you are in luck: there is no better setup for you to sell yourself and your skill to the hiring manager. Your job here  is to craft an answer that covers there things: that you can not only do the work, you can deliver great result; that you will really fit in with the team and culture; and that you had be better hire than any of the other candidates.

Why do you want this job?
Again companies want to hire people who are passionate about the job, so you should have a great answer why you want the position. First identify a couple of key factors that make the role great fit for you(e.g., “I love customer support because I love the constant human interaction and the satisfaction that comes from the helping someone solve a problem”), then share why you love the company.
It’s important to know well about the company and the profile so that you answer this question with concrete facts.

Tell me about a challenge or conflict you have faced at work and how you deal with it.
In asking this interview question, your interviewer wants to get the sense of how you will respond to conflict, anyone can seem nice and pleasant in a job interview, but what will happen if you are hired and soon develop profession conflicts with other departments/team members.
Again, you will want to use the S-T-A-R method , being sure to focus on how you handle the situation professionally and productively, and ideally closing with a happy ending, like how you come to a resolution or compromise.

Goods and Service tax

Good and service tax is a single tax on goods and service. It has subsumed central indirect taxes like excise duty, countervailing duty and service tax and indirect taxes like Value Added Tax, octroi and entry tax, purchase tax and entertainment tax. Introduction of GST will not affect direct tax system,

Commodities outside GST
The government of india will continue to charge excise duty on all petroleum & natural gas products, tobacco and opium products. GST on above product will applicable on later stage, which will be decided by GST council.
Only alcohol has been kept out of purview of GST. Thus, existing central and state taxes will continue to apply  on alcohol.

GST Rate
GST rate has not been capped. It has been decided by the GST council and will be reviewed by the council from time to time.

Compensation to states
Parliament has agreed to compensate states for any loss of revenues, on account of change in taxation system to GST, for a period of five years. A shift to new taxation system initially reduces the tax compliance among people and thus, in initial years the revenue of state governments may reduce. However, in the long run, GST will lead to increase in revenue of state governments.

Benefits of Introducing GST
  1. As GST is a uniform taxation system applicable throughout the country, GST will create uniform market across the country and make taxation transparent and hassle-free.
  2. GST has subsumed many taxes and thus, GST has made taxation system simple and reduced the cost of complying the taxation system.
  3. The earlier system of numerous tax departments hampered inter-department coordination and made tax evasion possible. GST will drastically increase the tax base and reduce tax evasion.
  4. After introduction of GST, Most of the goods will cheaper, the rate of tax under GST is less as compared to the tax rates existing earlier. In fact, the GST rate for essential commodities is 0%.
  5. The reduction in tax burden will reduce the price of goods, lower the production cost and improve exports. Thus, in the long run, implementation of GST will create a large number of jobs.
  6. Service are presently taxed at 15%. The GST rate for most of the service is around 18%. Thus, service are expected are to be costlier.
  7. Bigger beneficiary of GST is going to logistics industry since truck used to spend days altogether at the state tax barriers. These barriers will not become redundant and it will make movement of good at lease 60% quicker and a lot cheaper
  8. Because of all these reasons , GST in expected to add 2% to india’s GDP growth rate

Rate of GST
The Goods and Service Tax has goods and service categorized under the following slab rates

3%
Goods
Gold, silver and diamonds are placed in the category of 3% while rough diamonds would attract a nominal rate of 0.25%

Criticism of GST
A good GST was expected to yield major economic benefits, adding  2 percentage points to the growth rate. Unfortunately, what is on the table will not deliver that result thought it will be an improvement on the present system

It does achieve the objective of creating an indirect-tax system in which both the central and the state tax on any single commodity will be levied on the same base, and at the same rate throughout the country, while observing the value-added tax(VAT) principle of full set-off for earlier-stage taxes and zero-rating for exports. Other taxes like the central sales tax, octroi, entry tax etc., will be abolished from a taxation perspective this created a single national market for each commodity.

The GST will also address the complaint of domestic producers that they are at a disadvantage compared to imports, because the latter escape the burden of state taxes, although they do pay an additional duty equal to the central value-added tax(Cenvat). Once the GST is in place, import will be subject to GST at the rate as domestic products, thus ensuring a truly level-playing filed for domestic producers competing against imports.

Unfortunately, the GST being proposed departs from the experts view that an ideal GST should have a few exempted commodities and a single rate for all commodities. Lest such an ideal dismissed as academic, let us consider what countries actually do. According to the international monetary fund(IMF). 152 countries have now adopted the VAT, and of those , 69 have a single rate, with some exemption.  Admittedly, this means as many as 83 countries have multiple rates, but they don’t have anywhere near the number of rater we are considering.

Does this matter? The answer is a definite yes. The merit of a single rate is that evasion can only occur through “Under declaration”  of sales, which is more easily tracked, especially as we move towards electronic payments system. Multiple rates create incentives for deliberately mis-declaring items so they fall in a lower-rate slab. Inevitably, this creates scope for tax disputes and harassment/corruption. The proposal approved by the GST council will multiply the possibility.

Three exclusion from the GST are indefensible. These are electricity, real estate and petroleum products. It has been agreed that petroleum could into the GST list at the end of five years. A similar agreement is necessary for electricity and real estate. Extending the GST to real estate would encourage investment since real-estate development is an important part of fixed capital information. At present, taxes paid construction inputs, including steel, cement, paint, doors, and windows etc. cannot be credited against the GST to be paid on output from the factories/offices generating taxable goods and services. Bringing real estate under GST  would help these activities. It will help to discourage the use of black money in real-estate transactions.

Apart from this, the complex nature of compliance structure actually makes tax compliance more difficult then before.
The incremental burden of compliance shall vary for different classes of business. The service sector would be worst his as the benevolence of centralized would be taken away. Taxpayer would be required to get registered in every state from where he provides service. The number of fillings would increase from 2 to minimum 37 in a year for each registration, considering GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3 are treated as 3 returns. In case input service distributor and  Tax Deducted at source registration are obtained in a state. The number could go up by another 24 filings a year for each registration.
The service sector erstwhile was exposed only to the central authorities would now have to face the state authorities as well, leading to increased compliance costs.

Large manufacturers are already filling monthly Excise, Value Added Tax and Central Sales Tax returns and hence the pinch of increased compliance would felt to lesser extent. The factory level Excise and VAT registration within a state can now be consolidated into a single state-wide registration.

The micro and small sector, enjoying Excise duty exemption up to 1.5 crore, shall be heavily impacted as the registration threshold has been brought down to 10 lack as per Model GST Act. A composition scheme has been proposed for taxpayers having turnover up to 50 lacs, which provides for quarterly filling of returns. Such composition Taxpayer shall not eligible for input tax credit and would not be able to issue tax invoice. According to us, not many tax payers would wish to remain outside the credit chain. Apart from composition Taxpayers, quarterly filing relaxation has not been extended to other businesses and hence majority businesses shall have comparatively more fillings.

One area of concern is the online matching of input tax credit and reversal of credit or demand in case of mismatch. This process may turn out to be  the most irksome part of compliance. Keeping track of mismatches, tallying the same with books of accounts, accounting treatment of the same and dealing with non-compliant vendors may require a team in self. Problems similar to TDS returns filing in income tax may be expected during initial years, with monthly matching details and GST compliance rating being made available, compliant taxpayer would surely be preferred as business partners.

SEVEN LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES TO LEARN FROM AN EAGLE

1. *Eagles fly Alone and at High Altitudes.*
They don't fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds.

*MEANING*; Stay away from narrow-minded people, those that bring you down. Eagle flies with Eagles. Keep good company.

2. *Eagles have an Accurate Vision.*
They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.
*MEANING*; Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles and you will succeed.

3. *Eagles do not Eat Dead things.
They Feed only on Fresh Prey.*
*MEANING*; Do not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

4. *Eagles Love the Storm.*
When clouds gather, the eagle gets excited, the eagle uses the storms wind to lift itself higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagle uses the raging storm to lift itself above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the tree.

*MEANING*; Face your challenges head on knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges, rather they relish them and use them profitably.

5. *When a Female Eagle Meets a Male Eagle*
And they want to mate, she flies down to earth, picks a twig and flies back into the air with the male eagle in hot pursuit. Once she has reached a height high enough for her, she drops the twig and let it fall to the ground while she watches. The male eagle chases after the twig and catches it before it reached the ground, then bring it back to the female eagle. The female eagle grabs the twig and flies to a much higher altitude and drops the twig again for the male eagle to chase. This goes on for hours with the height increasing each time until the female eagle is assured that the male eagle has mastered the art of picking the twig which shows commitment. Then and only then will she allow him to mate with her.
*MEANING*; Whether in private life or business, one should test the commitment of the people intended for partnership.

6. *Eagles Prepare for Training;*
They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying and eventually flies when it becomes unbearable to stay in the nest.

*MEANING*; Leave your Comfort Zone, there is No Growth there.

7. *When the Eagle Grows Old,*
His feathers becomes weak and cannot take him as fast and as high as it should. This makes him weak and could make him die. So he retires to a place far away in the mountains. While there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beaks and claws against the rocks until he is completely bare; a very bloody and painful process. Then he stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks and claws and then he comes out flying higher than before.

*MEANING*; We occasionally need to shed off old habit no matter how difficult, things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go of.
*YES, NEVER GIVE UP,*
*BE AN EAGLE, NEVER EVER GIVE UP !!!*
